Some Basics Of Garden Compost

If you are a gardener one of the more important things to get great growing vegetables is to use compost. There are a number of reasons for that which I won't go into here but lets just say that good compost makes all the difference to how your plants will grow.

So just how do you make garden compost? The rest of this article will explain the basics of composting. The three basic things you need to make compost are a bin, organic material and water. The organic material is generally leaves and grass clippings. As far as water goes you want to have plenty of it but also not too much either.

You can decide to make either a hot or cold compost pile. If you choose to make a cold compost pile you will need a lot of patience as they often can take at least a year to produce good compost. The niceh thing about cold piles is they don't require as much attention and only need mixing once in a while.

A hot compost pile will not take nearly as long but needs a lot more attention than a cold pile as you have to add material and turn it frequently. The advantage of a hot pile in addition to its speed is that the heat kills diseases and pests that can be harmful to the plants. On the flip side the heat also destroys beneficial bacteria as well.

That is some basics of composting. I hope you find this article helpful in your own gardening.
